Madeline Andrew is an emerging textile and surface design artist based at Briggate Art Studios, Knaresborough, currently studying for an FdA in Textiles Practice at Bradford School of Art. Having spent most of her career as a scientist and teacher, Maddie is drawn to experimental artistic processes and currently works with cyanotype and eco-printing, creating bespoke fabrics, artworks and homewares using the local flora.
You can find Maddie at Alchemy Textile Design working out of Briggate Arts Studios in the pretty North Yorkshire town of Knaresborough, teeming with lovely cafes and other creatives. Find us behind the George and Dragon pub on Briggate, where there is a small car park (or disc zone parking on road).
I love to let mother nature help me out with my designs. She only yields the tones and hues the plants have to give. Eco-printing "in the dirty pot" is an environmentally friendly way to print on fabric, paper, leather and ceramic using real leaves themselves, bundled carefully and processed with their own hidden alchemy! The unbundling is the most fun part, hugely exciting to see what careful manipulation of the fabric and pot conditions has yielded.
It is lovely to chat to new artists and customers in person so feel free to pop in the studio during normal business hours. If you'd like something specific out of these hours, just message me and an arrangement may be arrived at.
